The ascending serotoninergic system stimulates GH, prolactin, and ACTH secretion. Central dopaminergic, noradrenergic, and serotoninergic systems are involved in the determination of affective state and may also be involved in the pathogenesis of the major psychoses. Drugs that are used in clinical psychiatry and which modulate central bioaminergic function may also influence endocrine function: for example, dopamine agonists inhibit prolactin release, and dopamine antagonists stimulate prolactin release.
